I may be working on "Written by a Poem", but that doesn’t stop me from spontaneously creating some unrelated pieces, which won’t necessarily be part of this collection.
Here’s something I scribbled this week, to an extent as a personal exercise.
Behind the Lines
My goal was to write two similar poems with opposite meaning and merge them naturally into one
A subtly ascending number of syllables in the first stanza (8, 4, 8, 6) vs slightly descending in the second (8, 6, 7, 6). Does this provoke a feeling?
Verb choice in the second part to trigger subconscious associations
- Snake: You can’t really read this word without connecting it with the animal first
- Rake: The association I was after was the raking of fallen (therefore dead) leavesPunctuation as a tool to enhance my message – notice the subtle difference between the lack and presence of full stops in the two stanzas.
Until next time, hold on to the rhyme ✍️,
